Escape from the Dark

£325.00 (Sold out)

Original painting in acrylic on board.

This is a painting of two canaries set in a blustery Yorkshire landscape. The painting is based on a mural celebrating canaries that I painted in 2014 and that is now part of the permanent collection of the National Coal Mining Museum. This painting is a smaller version but contrasts the canary's bright yellow plumage with the stormy sky in the same way as the mural did. Although canary's originate in the beautiful and warm Canary Islands they have been used in Yorkshire's coal mines since Victorian times. In that time  they must have saved the lives of hundreds of miners because they can detect poisonous gases often present in coal mines.

60cm x 60cm. Unframed. Signed and dated.
