Arthur

Arthur Wharton

Back in February 2013 we were commissioned by Sheffield's Off the Shelf Festival to paint a large portrait of Arthur Wharton. Arthur was the UK's first black professional footballer and in 1903 played for Sheffield United. Off the Shelf also commissioned poet Jackie Kay to write a poem celebrating Arthur's achievements.

Below (top) is a section of the portrait (shown prior to varnishing) that when finished measured 7 x 4 feet. The finished work (below bottom), including Jackie's poem is displayed on the outside wall of SUFC's stadium on John Street.
